Chamomile is essentially a benign tea, however, Ruth Lawrence references it
in a monograph on drugs and herbs a few yrs back as having some potentially
distressing side effects if used to excess (specifically sweating and
vomiting.) I have posted on Lactnet before about an interesting case I had
where a woman presented with a 3 mo. old baby who sweated profusely and had
projectile vomiting. Baby was big and healthy, and I suspected oversupply,
but watching a feed and doing test weights etc didn't reveal typical
behavior. Baby did not appear to be over-feeding per se. Talked at length
with mom about her ingestion of drugs or meds or weird diet stuff. Asked
about 20 diff. ways for this info. Finally after over an hour she says, "Oh
yeah, I drink 3 very strong cups of chamomile tea each evening for the
baby's colic." I suggested she discontinue, and lo and behold both sweating
and projectile vomiting ceased.
Moderation in all things.
