I personally had what seems like a very similar situation. Severe
hyperemisis, elevated liver functions, keytones, TPN, ultimately HELLP
syndrome and a 33 wk delivery. I also had a lot of trouble refeeding. But I
had absolutely no trouble breastfeeding. My milk came in on day 3 (oh boy did
it come in) and I had enough to feed my own child *and* donate milk to a 2 lb
baby in the nursery who was abandoned by his parents. My daughter gained
weight beautifully. I also had very much diminished stomach function for a
couple of weeks, and was on (I forget what exactly) a high blood pressure med
that the PDR said could increased milk supply (until my liver specialist said
that particular med could cause liver damage.) I was never discouraged from
nursing my child, and had absolutely no problems doing so. I got healthy and
strong again pretty quickly, even with this "stress" on my body.
