Heather asked if Health Visitors (?) exist elsewhere. I can't answer
that, but in Colorado, USA, we have a visiting nurses program for
newborns. Under certain insurance companies a new mother is entitled
to at least one visit around a week post partum. I had one after my
first birth. She weighed the baby, looked at my c-section incision
and that's about it. Pretty useless. I didn't know her, and never
saw her again. My main reason for having her come at all was to see
what she did, so I didn't bother the second time around.
I don't know if these vary by state, but they very well might.
