Thanks Gail and others for the suggestions. I'll clarify a bit by answering
your (Gail) questions, briefly.
1. Why no poops in 4 days? ----Exactly my question. Obviously not enough
calories ingested, especially when poor weight gain is also occurring.
2. Is weight accurate.-----Yes, same scale and it measures in grams. There
was an error in my typing in the original post however, baby's weight at 6
days was 1 ounce below discharge weight (not birth weight) sorry about
that.
3. How often/how much?----As I mentioned, feeding was observed and latch
was good with nutritive suck, though baby seemed to be more of a grazer
(slow and laid back), thus my suggestion to mom on breast compression. Baby
was nursing 8-9 times/24 hours; I suggested she increase this to 10 times.
4. Is baby stimulating mom's supply effectively?----that I don't know yet.
With the suggestions I gave her we should see a difference if this is
occurring.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to follow up on this mom and had a co-worker
see her in my absence. (Step daughter made me a grandmother for the first
time, with my help as coach, a tough roll for an L&D nurse in her own hosp.
Also, her Dad just died a few days before the birth, so it's been a tough
week around here). I'll be checking in at work tomorrow and see how things
are going with this mom. Her Dr is also aware of the situation and is more
than breastfeeding friendly, she's one of my clients too, so I know the
situation is being handled well.
Again, thanks for the suggestions and ideas, will let you know how it
progresses.
