I apologize for the long post, but I have to get this out to you all and get
feedback BEFORE our mid-August group meeting when we will discuss the
following "supplementation form for breastfeeding mothers" proposed by two ICN
nurses who do not like the one we have now. Here is THEIR contribution:
SUPPLEMENTING THE BREAST FEEDING INFANT
"Sometimes breast feeding mothers will want to supplement their babies for
non-medical reasons, such as:
1. They don't feel they have enough milk the first few days to satisfy
the baby's
appetite. For example, the infant has nursed well and is still
fussy and
appearing to want to eat.
2. The mother wishes to sleep through the night.
3. The infant has a continuous need to suck
4. The father wants to feed the baby
5. The mother wants the infant to do both, bottle and breast, so she
has free
time to herself.
If your baby is a normal healthy newborn, the guidelines from the
American Academy of Pediatrics states it is not necessary to supplement with
water or formula. If your baby is supplemented with water or formula, there
is a chance that your milk supply may not be as abundant. Also, some infants
may get nipple confused when given a bottle or pacifier. This may interrupt
breastfeeding and your milk supply.
Certainly we want to support your decision to breast feed and provide you
with this information, but we wll honor your request to supplement should you
desire to do so."
I am sick to my stomach! I can't believe this! BUT, nonetheless, it is
their best effort. They feel the mother should be given the pros and cons of
formula, and these two nurses never breastfed their own kids. COMMENTS are
welcome.
This doesn't sound like support to me, more like sabotage. Loni Denman,
RN, IBCLC
