Doris, What a heartbreaking story! You asked if it would help to give
this baby human milk--I am convinced that it would! I know of one
other child in a coma that was given mama's milk through her NG tube
while she was in ICU--her mom is sure it helped her recover! (Would
the hospital staff be willing to give the milk?) You asked also if
there was something else to stimulate the brain to get the child on
the road to recovery. Does the hospital have physical and occupational
therapy staff? If so, when the baby is stable, they will begin to
gently "range" his extemities and massage, etc his body. If not, the
family may need to learn how to do this. (My husband tells the story
of the time his boy scout troop took on the "ranging" for a boy in his
town. They took shifts throughout the week!) You said he can hear.
There is nothing better than mama's voice to him. She should sit and
talk to him and read to him as if he hears everything. There should be
music, his favorite, or whatever mom can sing. Maybe Mozart tapes
would help--there's a book about the Mozart Effect that my child's
music teacher speaks highly of. On the pediatric long-term care ward
where I once worked, we had accident victims of all kinds admitted in
terrible shape and leave amazingly well.
Don't give up hope! Wishing you and his family well, Rowena Tucker
