I do not agree that having to use a steroid ointment on the nipples
contraindicates breastfeeding.

I often prescribe steroid ointments for nursing mothers for various
reasons, and I tell them to apply it after feedings and *not* wash or
wipe it off when the baby goes back to the breast.  I feel the risk is
virtually zero for the baby (how much is the baby going to ingest
after all?), and far outweighed by the risks of formula feeding.

The mother has a right to feel cheated about her first.  She was
cheated.
