I came home last night from a great Auerbach/Ahrendson conference in
Manhattan, KS...hope that's not illegal advertising for 2 famous
Lactnetters :-). However, I've definitely had better days...I rec'd
word that a breastfeeding mother I've worked w/ was called home from her
part-time job because the caregiver said her 5-month old was having a
seizure. Well, when the baby was taken to the hospital, he was put on
life support and, to make a long story short, the caregiver is suspected
of depriving the little guy of oxygen for 30 minutes to 1 hour (!) since
many other causes were ruled out. He was to be taken off life support
just a few hours ago and I am devastated. I've worked w/ death and
dying issues before, but never w/ a suspected murder case. Any words of
wisdom, support, etc. would be more than appreciated from those of you
who may have been near situations like this. Right now mom is pumping
and wanting to donate to a milk bank; what a lady to think of others in
the middle of this tragedy! I'm just praying that maybe there's another
cause of death they haven't ruled out...the mom had struggled w/ the
work decision and determined that part-time was what she wanted to do,
seemed happy, etc., so I know there will be a lot of guilt following
this. Thanks for all your caring ears and support in advance!

since at least I can hold him)
