Martha Peelor asks about milk leaking through a healing incision in the
breast. It's my understanding that milk will normally leak from the incision
when a lactating woman has surgery on her breast, and the thing to do is to
let it leak. The opening eventually closes up. Suturing the incision closed
is not a good idea, since then the milk has nowhere to go and the pressure
builds up inside the breast and pulls the incision apart.
One mom we spoke to who was living through the leaking said that she used
sanitary pads sold for menses to absorb the leaking milk. It was a great
nuisance, but she was able to continue nursing or pumping, and eventually the
incision healed from the inside outward.
