What about hand expression rather than pumping?  I don't know how well it
works when the milk supply is not full/well-established, but it is an
alternative where the mother is in control.  I find the Marmet technique
described in LLL's _The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding_ comfortable and
effective (expressed all the milk my daughter needed from 2 months to 12
months while working 40 hours/week).
