Response to Toni's post:
I use shields in my practice as necessary and yes, some babies go nuts when
the weaning process is started. After years of seeing this, I feel there is
no one right way to do it. Try again destroying the shield (snipping from the
inside), or slipping it off, adding a finger to suck for a second or two helps
then. But the key words I think and have found are "gentle perseverence."
The baby is young enough that with repetition I have never found a baby to
not, eventually go onto the breast. There is no hurry is there, if the baby
is eating adequately, and the mother's breasts are ok, right? Good luck.
