Hello all,
I've been having an ongoing discussion with a local OB (who routinely advises
pregnant nursing mothers to wean) about the risks of nursng through a
pregnancy. The doc in question seems pretty convinced that the nipple stim
involved in having an older child at the breast is too dangerous and can cause
spontaneous abortion, as well as the nutritional demands detracting from the
health of the fetus.
I was able to find some studies that indicated that the fetuses were not
compromised and were born at normal weights, but I can't find any cites for
the statement I've often heard that orgasm causes the release of as much or
more oxytocin than nursing a child does. Does anyone know of studies which
support that statement?
This doc is part of a busy practice, and I know of more than one mom they've
advised to wean a nursling *immediately* upon confirming a new pregnancy.
Still, he seemed open to new information. Of course, I can't present it
without support, so any pertinent references would be very welcome!
Thanks.
