Regarding what to talk to working moms about. Besides the obvious like pumping, working, milk handling...I also talk about staying home as long as possible. I bring 2 flyers on the family leave act as well as a one page write up regarding family leave that I wrote. Many people still don't know about Family Leave. Even their employers' human resource person may not know much about it. So, it is important to inform the mom. I also bring a handout on the cost of formula for a year vs. the cost of pumping. Instead of saying, you could buy a major appliance with money saved, I now say you could get an extra month off from work (depending on their salary obviously). $1200 tax free! I also have a discussion on not buying too much for baby. Most of the garbage sold is useless. I bring a "magazine" given out with childbirth class gift packs, it is called the lullaby club (it is just ads for a store). It has page after page of items with checklists of things to buy for baby. I tell them 90% of this stuff is not needed (a low estimate). I tell them that (other than diapers and a t shirt) a good car seat is about the only necessity you will need (if you plan on taking baby in a car in its first 4 years and 40 pounds). Save your money during pregnancy, buy less, stay home longer. Since we live in a 24 hour town (casinos) I also mention mom and dad working different shifts. Eventually I will stock my lending library with some of those how to stay home on one income books, but I haven't found one at a yard sale yet!
