Marcia,
I disagree that there is a lag between the 'loss' of reflexes and
becoming cognitively driven.  Reflexes gradually diminish as they are
incorporated into voluntary movement patterns as the infant matures.  If
this is not occuring, there is probably an undiagnosed neurological or
neuromotor problem, and the child would probably benefit from being seen
by an occupational or physical therapist.
