I work with a fair number of Oriental mothers(well educated). Last week
an Oriental father became quite upset with the pediatrician for ordering
phototherapy(Wallabye). Baby had a bili of 23mg/dl, 6+ wets, stooling
good, feeding well. Father states jaundice is normal in Oriental babies
and did not want the baby re-drawn or treated. Is there a different
base/standard for bilirubin in China? Most of my Oriental mothers will
nurse but always insist there is no milk the first 3 days and want to
feed formula and bf those first 3 days. If higher bilirubin is
acceptable for Oriental babies, is there reference materials available
for the pediatricians? What is the standard of care in hospitals in
China? Is there a higher incidence of brain damage in China?
