Straight off, thanks for all the help from everyone who responded
both to the list and to me privately.
I saw the mother again this afternoon, and thinks are terrific, at
least from a breastfeeding perspective.
She has sooooo much help that it humbles a poor little IBCLC like me.
She has a full time, live in nanny, as well as a housekeeper\cook.
We talked quite a bit about her need for support, and talked again
about LLL or something like it. (She doesn't want to go). We also
discussed depression/exhaustion, but she is really sure that's not
the problem. The crux of the problem, after much delicate digging
and discussion appears to be that her first 2 babes were 9 and 10
pounds and this little one was 6. She finds that so scary. We
talked some more about how the baby was now 9lbs 13oz (at 4 weeks)
and how this kid is probably pretty sturdy. she is very concerned
that the baby isn't getting enough. I tell you honestly that I
wanted to bounce my forehead of the coffee table. I got out the
growth charts, showed her where her baby fell and reasurred her. Then
I told her that I was really pround of her for persevering through
what was really scary for her, told her she was doing a spectacular
job and wished her well. She asked me to come back in a few days to
make sure every thing was still good. ARRRGGGHHHH! This mom
explained to me that if she can afford it then why can't she pay me
to be her friend. She likes me, is used to me and only wants my
support. OK, I'm at a loss, I want to support this mom, really do.
But I've got other clients, 3 kids, volunteer work, a house, and
school to contend with and my job really isn't to "be her friend".
I've made all the referrals I can, and I've been really good.....4
visits, 9 phone calls......... all when the technical breastfeeding
issue was solved at the first visit! How do I wean this client!
yours in frustration,
Stephanie Pearl IBCLC
