I have Hale's 97 edition, but I don't know if it's listing for
Sulfamethoxazole is any different than the 96 edition, and 98 isn't out yet.
"AAP: not reviewed... is secreted in hbm in small amounts. It has a longer
half life than other sulfonamides. Use with caution in weakened infants and
premature infants with hyperbilirubinemia. Gantrisin (Sulfisoxazole) is
considered the best choice of sulfinamides due to reduced transfer to infant.
Compatible but use caution."
Then for Gantrisin he says "AAP: approved... It is excreted in hbm in small
amts, although actual levels are somewhat contriversial. Kaufman (1980)
reports less than 1% of the maternal dose is secreted in hbm, and that this is
probably insufficient to produce problems in a normal newborn. Sulfisoxazole
appears to be best choice with lowest milk:plasma ratio. Use with caution in
weakened infants or those with hyperbilirubinemia."
