This spring, I've seen 4 mothers with unusually heavy blood loss at birth
who subsequently had markedly low supplies. Claire Willis and Verity
Livingstone wrote about this in JHL 11(2): 123-26, 1995 (Infant
insufficient milk syndrome associated with maternal postpartum hemorrhage)
and responded to a letter to the editor about it in JHL 12(3), 1996.
I can't account for my clients' persistent low supplies in any other way,
but all 4 have had near-complete or complete supplies by 6-8 weeks pp,
using pumping, formula supplements, and fenugreek.
I never saw this before, but I'm sure going to ask about blood loss in the
future!
