At the hospital I work, there is a policy which states that the ointment can
be delayed for up to an hour before application " to promote bonding".
At this time, those of us who are breastfeeding advocates, assist the mother
with breastfeeding. The father /significant other is usually busy taking
photos.
A very common question on certain exam papers (that I know of) is "What is the
side effect of Erythromycin ointment?''
Ans. It causes eye redness in the baby. Because it sets up a mild eye
irritation.
