Hello lactnet list!
I have gotten a wonderful opportunity to help put together a non-profit
newsletter in my area, to go out to over 50 doctors, as well as others. It
will deal mostly with bf, but also the E**o type advice many women in this
area are getting that is severely impacting their bf experiences. The
wonderful LC who will be our benefactor in this venture is concerned about the
number of women she sees that are using scheduling at very young ages with bf
babies, to the detriment of that relationship. Also, we will be detailing
attachment parenting's benefits from an evolutionary/biological standpoint,
presenting the exciting new research on brains and stress and bonding, and the
co-sleeping stuff from Commons at Harvard, etc.
I have read so much good info in the last 2 yrs on these subjects, and a large
part of what I have read has been from fellow Lactnet members. My question is
this: how does one go about talking about research in this type of public
forum? Is it enough to paraphrase, citing the research, as I do in my
scholarly papers, or must I get permission even for that? How often does
permission get granted to actually reprint type of thing? And, most
importantly, does anyone know of un-copyrighted materials I can use? (I just
got a blessing in the form of Ruth Lawrence's new paper, which has no such
restrictions.) I am seeing the challenge with this paper as being the
offering of SCIENTIFIC data to back up the parenting/bf stuff, while I am
still in college and have no titles or degrees after my name to warrant the
belief of "my" personal ideas (as of yet). I can't see a way around
attempting to procure copyright permissions, yet I am loathe to offend the
authors. Protocol, someone?
I know some of you have embarked on similar projects--what did you do?
And if any of you brilliant souls who have written articles want to grant me
permission, PLEASE e-mail me!! I really believe this endeavor is going to
make quite an impact in this area, where doctors are still advising "medieval"
practices like giving K*ro syrup, weaning for dermatitis, formula for
jaundice, etc. Uggh--I want to come off sounding intelligent, articulate, and
above all well-researched, to really make the biggest and most interesting
splash among this often bf/child unfriendly population.
Comments, advice, etc. welcome.
