The abscesses I have seen have been darker around the periphery,
yellowish-brown over the abcess itself, and on palpation the abcess
feels markedly softer than the surrounding tissue.  They are also
intensely painful.  Sometimes if the abcess heals spontaneously, it
leaves behind a scar like the navel of an orange on the skin immediately
above.
