Dear Friends,
One of the NICU nurses asked me out of the blue for information on human
milk freezing and storage guidelines for a Level II NICU (Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit). Are they different for preemies or for full
termers who are there for medications?
I searched the archives under milk freezing and thawing, but could not
find what I was looking for. Specifically, what do similar institutions
do about freezing, how long, in what containers, in what amounts, how is
thawing done, how long, what is the temp of the water bath, and anything
else that relates to administering expressed breastmilk to a sick
preemie, and a not so sick preemie. Do you have guidelines for how
often tubing set ups are changed, how long milk may hang or be in
adminstration pump?
Please email me privately as well as to Lactnet as I am going nomail as
of Friday March13 until Monday March 16. Thank you for your help. I
have contacted Lois Arnold for the Human Milk Banking Assoc of North
America guidelines.
