Victoria,

I had a lump removed while nursing my 10 month old who is now 22 years old.
The incision was about 1 1/2" wide and quite deep. The surgeon put a drain in
it for the first few days and instructed me to pump and not nurse the baby. I
had aquired a Lloyd-B pump for pumping. I pumped one time and had milk
leaking from the drain and the incision. I noticed if I started nursing on
the side without surgery, I would begin to leak from the surgery side at the
time of MER. I leaked several ounces out the incision. I decided to put my
son back to the side with surgery and nurse first on that side each time I
nursed. I would still leak from the incision, but much less when my son
nursed from the surgery side first. I pictured it like a garden hose with a
hole in it. If you clamped off the end, more water would leak out the hole
then if it could flow out the end (or nipple). The incision had to heal from
the inside out, it took about three weeks for all the leaking to stop. It
healed up beautifully. All that breastmilk with anitbodies what could be a
better bath for a moist wound healing.
