She would want to have the surgery done by a plastic surgeon familiar with
a technique that tries to preserve the function of the breast. The nipple
is excised but underlying tissue remains connected (I believe this is
called a "pedicle"). A surgeon familiar with this technique used to work in
our area, unfortunately he died not too long ago. He claimed that this
technique preserved function in most, if not all, of his patients. I only
worked with one of his patients, but she had no problems with
breastfeeding.
