Dear Karen,
I've been lazy, expecting someone else to post this reference on Lactnet,
but so far no one has. Perhaps it has already been sent directly to you.
The best information I've read in recent years on returning control of
feeding to the infant is Mike Woolridge's chapter in Stuart-Macadam and
Dettwyler 1995, Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives, published by
Aldine de Gruyter. The chapter is called Baby-Controlled Breastfeeding:
Biocultural Implications. The one thing that has made the most
difference to me as a La Leche League leader was the information that
frequent feeding increases the fat content of milk and gaps between feeds
increases the water content. A lot of English babies have been saved
from top-up bottles in the evenings because this makes sense to mothers.
I hope this helps.
