From: Teresa Wolf Parriott --UNMCVM(TPARRIOT)
In the past week here at work in the NICU I have encountered a
strange trend. There are 3 moms who have decided that they want only to
pump and bottle feed their breastmilk. I am pretty sure that at least
one was given the impression that if baby was bottle fed he would be
able to go home sooner, the other two I am not sure what their reasons
were. In my very unofficial position as a "breastfeeding expert" I have
tried to educate my peers that this is not true, but change is very slow
in my unit and support for breastfeeding is not great. I have only had a
few moms before who wanted to do this and wonder what the best approach
to take with this. Is this a common trend? Having pumped and bottle fed
(against my wishes but I was young and didn't know where to get help) I
don't understand this. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this, what to say
to moms, ect.
thanks,
Tess Parriott R.N.
