Dawn and all,
I did a quick check on Medline for the literature on tongue-tie. Here are a
few select articles to refer to:
Masaitis NS, et al. Developing a frenotomy policy at one medical center: a
case study approach. J Hum Lact 1996 Sep 12(3):229-232
Velanovich V. The transverse-vertical frenuloplasty for ankyloglossia.
Military Medicine 1994 Nov 159(11):714-715
Nicholson WL, et al. Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) associated with breastfeeding
problems. J Hum Lact 1991 Jun 7(2):82-84
Fleiss PM, et al. Ankyloglossia: a cause of breastfeeding problems? J Hum Lact
1990 Sep 6(3):128-129
Marmet C, et al. Neonatal frenotomy may be necessary to correct breastfeeding
problems. J Hum Lact 1990 Sep 6(3):117-121
If you can get hold of the September 1990 Journal of Human Lactation, it is
solely about tongue-tie. (Thanks Kathy A!) There are lots of good articles in
that issue. You may also want to search for yourself on Medline at
http://www.nlm.nih.gov . Using PubMed, enter the search words tongue-tie or
ankyloglossia. You will get slightly differing results. I had to do this very
search myself not a month ago for a LC helping with a severely tongue-tied
baby. The pedi refused to clip the frenulum; the parents did not want to go
against the doctor. The references helped bolster their courage to seek an ENT
to clip the baby's frenulum.
Hope this helps a little.
Warmly
Carol Kelley, LLLL
