I had a mom call yesterday with a question re: initial engorgement. This is on
day 3.Mom nursed 1st baby x4 days and quit due to engorgement. She called
because she is afraid this will happen again. Baby has been nursing well and
frequently I responded with my usual suggestion of cool compresses and cabbage
leaves for comfort, adding that most moms enjoy the coolness, but if she hates
that she can also try warmth. Also added to keep up the pace of frequent
feeds. She said she had been told at the Hosp by the L.C. that any cold
applied to the breast at this time will shut down her milk supply. Have I
missed something new? Been doing this for 13 years and never heard that this
could happen on day3 from cold application when coupled with a good nurser.
