It isn't just the flange than can *cut* a breast. Christmas eve I got a call
from a mom who said she had a bleeding hole in her breast. What she actually
had was a deep gash about 1/4 inch away from the rim of the areola that ran in
a half moon shape across the entire top of the areola. The mom had purchased
a mag-mag pump for engorgement. Turned it on, plugged the relief valve and
left it against her breast for *nearly an hour* without releasing the
pressure. Basically it pulled the tissue apart--breast rupture. I asked her
if she read the instructions--*no, was I supposed to?* (argh!! Shouldn't the
pain stop you?)
I sent her to her health care provider. The wound was sutured and mom is not
breastfeeding.
