I am a bit behind on Lactnet and just came across Pamela Morrison's post on
self-calming babies which was in response to another.

Bravo Pamela, you are right on. I find it frightening that the mothers I am
seeing (and they know no economic or social bounds) feel that EVERYTHING else
is more important than attending to their baby's needs. ("I don't want this
baby to get too attached to me." ) We are currently seeing the result of
self-centered parenting. The mother (and in all likelihood the father also)
is detached from the baby worrying more about her own space and time for the
almighty ME. The baby never does become attached to their mother, never
learns to attach to anyone and passes this horrid state of affairs onto the
next generation. These children have no sense of committment, loyalty or
attachment and do not bond to their own children whom they appear to not
really want. They are also lacking in conscience. I fear for the future.

Dr. Spock wrote an article on getting baby to go to sleep printed in the March
PARENTING Magazine. This article is right up there with Dr. Ferber's book.
How sad that parents do not follow their gut instincts and dispose of these
writings along with the disposable diapers! I cannot for the life of me think
of a valid reason why a parent would want to listen to their child cry
pitifully when a little nursing and a little rocking and hugging could lull a
babe to sleep PEACEFULLY. I throw away every copy of a certain sleep book I
come in contact with. Call me a rebel. Or call me a mom who always has
peacefull bedtimes with her three children. These folks should read Dr.
Sears.

Now that I have that off my, um, chest Thanks for listening. Thanks Pamela!
