Springing up from lurkdom to ask a quick question, since I can't find the
answer after a good, healthy search in the archives. I'm working with a
pregnant woman who plans to have a tubal ligation the day after she gives
birth. She would like information on the best anesthesia choice for her and
her nursing newborn baby.

The Breastfeeding Answer Book says that she can nurse as soon as she is
capable of doing so if she chooses to have a general. She'd prefer not to,
having had past unpleasant experiences with generals.

The BAB also gives information about the effects of an epidural during
labor on newborns. But we'd like information about the possible effects of
a spinal or epidural given to a mother nursing a newborn. Will she have the
same concerns of possible sleepiness and suck problems, or does little pass
through the milk?

Thanks. :-)
