Although I certainly join Andrea in not wanting to sound like I am "bashing
WIC" (in general), the efforts in my city of Little Rock AR where bf rates are
abysmal at best--
10% of WIC moms bf any at all--I must sat that when I take advantage of public
transportation in my town which basically only poverty level citizens ride, I
am dismayed. On the walls of the bus inside are flyers, ads, etc. One is
from WIC and shows a woman in a business suit, standing next to a computer,
coiffed nicely, baby in one arm. No problems so far right? Great to portray
working and mothering together; after all the bulk of the world's population
does just that without any ado at all. But the slogan underneath says
"Supermom? WIC can help!" In this case, Supermom is not doing such a super
job--the baby has a bottle that is propped into it's mouth. WIC is promoting
breastfeeding here? I could do a better job with some crayons, or the visual
aid from my last LLL meeting, and I don't even need government $ to do it.
Disappointed with bureaucratic inefficacy,
Joy Berry-Parks
