I had a call yesterday from a mother of a 16 month old. The baby did not
gain any weight or grow from 12 - 15 months. Aside from some anemia
there hasn't been any medical problem identified. After I finished
talking to the mother I reviewed my slow weight gain materials and
discovered that I have no information on slow weight gain in a baby of
this age. All of the materials assume that the baby is eating foods
other than breastmilk, and that once this is happening there is no problem.
My questions: IF breastmilk is the nearly exclusive source of
nutrition for a baby of this age 1-How should our questions be different?
2- How often and how long should a 15 month old be nursing? 3- What do
we ask about in terms of wet diapers and bowel movements? and most
importantly 4- What else should we be suspicious of about the cause of
this problem, since we know that breastmilk and breastfeeding are not the
problem?
TIA
