As Pat Bull mentioned in a post on December 16, there was a work group
which met in August 1995 to discuss issues related to expressing, storing,
and handling of milk with particular reference to day care settings and the
healthy term infant. Wendy Slusser, MD, was the convener for the group
which met in the Wellstart offices in Washington, DC. As Pat mentioned we
did discuss the issue of whether it was safe to refeed partially fed
bottles of expressed breastmilk. Some felt very comfortable with the idea;
others felt very UNcomfortable with idea, particularly since there has been
NO RESEARCH in this area.
The Work Group thus came to NO consensus on this issue. It is therefore
NOT sound public health policy to recommend at this time that mothers can
safely refrigerate and reuse leftover portions of feedings. I would be
cautious about making this recommendation.
