One of my clients has an FTT baby. When I made a follow-up housecall
at 3 weeks, I didn't like the look of the baby... that "old man" face,
although the baby looked strong and had urination and bowel movements.
We went together to the pediatrician who didn't detect anything physical
but encouraged the mom to supplement with expressed breastmilk because
the baby was going down in weight. A week later, the baby wasn't doing
any better so formula supplementation was ordered. Soon after, the baby
was hospitalized for FTT. All of the tests so far have come back normal
except for a slight urinary infection which responded to antibiotics.
The baby has been hospitalized for 10 days and doing a bit better but
still very slow to gain weight. Mom is resisting galvage feedings.
Both parents are well educated, dedicated and loving.
What are the possible causes of FTT in a month old baby who was born
perfectly normal? I suspect it may have to do with a metabolism
problem.
