Greetings to all Lactnetters,
I am an ICBLC (since 1997) on Long Island (NY). I work in a hospital in
post partum so deal mostly with newborns. I was recently presented with a
problem by a friend. Mother is nursing baby now 1 year old. Baby was
identified as having multiple food allergies, including all dairy, wheat,
and oats. Mother wanted to wean but realizes now that this is not possible
at this time. Baby recently cut her two top teeth and ever since mother
has been experiencing increasingly sore nipples. Mother denies any history
of yeast infection in herself or baby. Baby has not been biting. I thought
perhaps baby has altered her sucking pattern and style since her teeth came
in. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for this mother. She is
using Masse and Lansinoh creams. I advised mother to pump for a few
feedings but baby refuses bottle and does not do well with cup. Any
thoughts/advice for this mother would be gratly appreciated.
Sincerely, Christine Foley, RN, BSN, IBCLC
