<< I recommended she try having baby
straddle mom's knee to nurse, and try pumping off first milk and freezing
it for later use, burp baby frequently, and eliminate all dairy from her
diet for the next few days. >>
Remember, "it takes ten days to 2 wks to eliminate cow's milk protein from
the mother's diet, (so) encourage her to allow the full two wks before gauging
the results." The LLLI Breastfeeding Answer Book 1991 edition pg 266
In one study (Jakobsen 1984) 35 out of 66 mothers of "colicky" babies reported
a decrease in their babies' fussiness when they eliminated milk and milk
protein from their diets.
I would say this advice helps about 75% of the moms who call me with colicky
babies. Yogurt, cheese, etc. is also out, at least at first >2 wks. If
improvement is seen, milk-based products like yogurt and cheese can be
gradually added back in one at a time to watch for reaction. In many cases
mom is allergic herself to milk and does'nt realize it, but after this regimen
will report a long-standing skin problem clears up, etc. Do be sure she
realizes that lactose intolerance is not the problem... many moms are confused
and do not realize that breastmilk has far more lactase than cow's milk in the
first place, and there is not much evidence to show failure to produce the
enzyme needed to break down lactose in anyone under about four yrs of age, ijn
humans. Good luck!
