After having 39 people E-mail me off the list I am giving up and posting
this to everyone.
There are no identifying features in them (I editied that out) but both
are from LC's on this list.
For those who thanked me....I just did the typing, one of your peers did
all the real work.

Job Description:  CERTIFIED LACTATION CONSULTANT

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Develops, implements, and evaluates breast feeding
education/support programs for patients and families during the
prenatal and postpartum period. Staffs the lactation office to provide
mothers and babies with assistance with breast feeding.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate of accredited school of nursing or baccalaureate degree in
the health field.
2. Current certification as an International Board Certified Lactation
Consultant.
3. Experience: Understanding of adult learning principles and experience

in a hospital setting; maternity preferred.

JOB RELATIONS:
1. Reports directly to unit manager and sponsoring physician
2. Subordinate staff:  responsible for duties of lactation consultant
assistant.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
1. Develop, implement, and evaluate breast feeding programs for patient
education/family education: both prenatally and postpartum.
2. Purchase, review and evaluate breast feeding audiovisual and other
patient teaching aids for patient use.
3. Provide breast feeding assessment, support, and counseling to
inpatients as well as outpatients.
4. Make appropriate referrals to physicians, breast feeding support
groups, and other supportive services; as available.
5. Collaborate with nursing staff for the development, implementation,
and evaluation of teaching aids.
6. Consult with physicians and nursing staff regarding the establishment

of breast feeding protocols with the hospital setting.
7. Review and maintain a file of current research and literature and
serve as a resource person to nursing staff, physicians, students, and
other interested persons.
8. Maintain current knowledge of breast feeding trends via attending
breast feeding seminars and educational meetings.
9. Provide leadership for activities to promote breast feeding in the
community.
