Eutie - I am often (seems like always?!) in the position of talking to a
NICU Mom who had not previously planned to breastfeed, but the extra worry
about their baby pushes them towards doing it. Even if these Moms only pump
for a week or two and never put the baby to breast, I consider my effort
and Mom's effort worthwhile. Even if they only pump through engorgement,
the high risk baby gets colostrum and milk for the first few feeds. Tiny
premies last quite a while on an engorged Mom's supply (we store it in very
small amounts). I consider this success - and then there are the Moms who
find they do well and out their tiny baby to breast, and never would have
otherwise...Big Success!!
