Hi there Suzanne,

You said..

"A sample of her breastmilk showed she had a "strep"
infection, so she was treated with Keflex for 20 days: no resolve. The baby
shows no sign of a yeast infection, but the obstetrician wants to try another
dose of Duflucan for mom and this time baby also (much to the pediatrician's
reluctance)."

If you do a search for diflucan and thrush in Lactnet since even for the
past few months, you will see a note in there by Jack Newman MD that talks
about how a single dose (isn't it called a bullet dose?) of Diflucan is not
enough to cure thrush that is existing inside the ductal tissue of a
lactating woman. Sometimes, it takes several weeks of treatment, if I
remember Jack's note correctly, and a single dose will often do nothing,
leading to the incorrect assumption by some that the problem is not thrush
in the first place.

To do the search, do a

Search * in Lactnet where sender contains newman since October 1997
to

and I believe that the note will come up.

Also, you can go back and do the search in the archives at the url in my
sig. line.

Best wishes, and hope this mother feels better soon. There's no proving it
is thrush, except by treatment (and of course it might be other things, you
may want to rule some other things out as well)..has she tried Gentian
Violet in water, half percent, for a very limited course of treatment? I do
believe that Jack has a protocol on this as well, in written form.

Best wishes. Kathleen
