Hi All,
As to whether 2-3 frenotomies per week is "too many" I can't say. I have
seen too many babies who needed a frenotomy who didn't get one until it was
too late and the BF had failed as a result. I think the key here is to
diagnose the tight frenulum properly and accurately. If frenotomies are
being performed simply because nothing else has worked and it is a last
resort BUT there are no visible signs of a tight frenulum (heart shaped
tongue, no extension over the gum ridge etc.) then I'd say that this would
be inappropriate. Allison Hazelbaker's frenulum info is GREAT! It turned a
former "Frenotomies aren't neccessary" oral surgeon (whose baby was then
born with a very tight frenulum) into an advocate and educator in our area
to help babies and BF.
