Dateline reported that Emma and her baby's breastfeeding needs were
accommodated in the following manner:
she was taken off pilot's duty and assigned to a desk job with a two and a
half hour lunch break and the ability to pump during work hours. Assuming
Dateline reported the relevant facts, what's the problem? I was surprised
that the military would accommodate her needs to that extent!
Many of the working moms I rent pumps to would give their eyeteeth for that
kind of situation. I have a mom so committed to giving her baby
breastmilk that when she returned to work in a large grocery store she had
to pump standing up in the walk-in refrigerator because it was the only
place she could get a little privacy! Her lunch break is 30 minutes. She
is also able to pump for 10 minute intervals when other employees get their
smoking breaks.
This did not seem to be a story about a mom's difficult choice to be able
to continue breastfeeding. It seemed to be more about her realizing that
she wanted to be home with her baby.....not piloting helicopters. Based
on the information we were given, it seems hard to fault the military.
