Dear Dr. Hale and anyone else who can help:
I have a mom who delivered a baby 6 weeks early (about 4lbs 14 oz); she
has PIH and was in danger of developing HELLP, but is now stable. She
wants to breastfeed, and the baby would be able to go to breast today, but
the Neonatologist is holding off because mom began taking Zoloft 50mg.
today again. She took it throughout pregnancy, and up until 3 days ago.
Apparently she really needs the drug, and has tried other antidepressants
that did not work for her. Is the concern about Zoloft (I looked it up in
Briggs and in Hale '94 - "use with extreme caution") greater than the risks
of formula feeding? Can you explain why Zoloft is apparently fine in
pregnancy but dangerous in BF? The parents have asked me to try and get
the most up-to-date info for them. Thank you very much.
