Re : Omnipaque 240
Omnipaque is a special formulation used in CAT scans, etc. Although it
contains a great deal of iodine, the iodine is covalently bound to the
parent molecule and is not released or absorbed by the patient. It is
primarily retained in the plasma compartment and has a brief half-life of
about 1 hour or less. It is virtually unabsorbed orally. It is often used
in neonates for radiological procedures.
To be absolutely safe, one could pump and dump for up to 4-5 hours
afterward, but I really think this is unnecessary. We do not have any data
yet on its transfer into human milk, but I expect it to be very low.
