In my facility we have found that day 4 is usually late for anyone who has been
having a problem with latch on, sleepy baby, premies etc..., day 3 seems to be
better. I usually try to match the day with certain circumstances, generally
the smaller and less feeds the baby has had in hospital, the sooner I see the
family. Most maternal complaints seem to surface on day 3 ie engorgement, sore
nipples. My goal to see them on day three is to guide them through preventing
engorgement. I find in the hospital, most parents are in a whirl wind of
notifying family and friends of the birth and very rarely remember the
information we give them verbally and the written information is usually still
packed in the suitcase. For routine clients without any red flags, I phone on
day three to see how they are and evaluate if they need to be seen at all. This
conserves my resources for the few needy patients and allows me more time with
them. Keep up the good work.
