In my area there is a neonatologist who is working to make a policy that
any woman who has a history of having used illicit drugs or alcohol to
excess (?) either during or prior to her pregnancy will not be "allowed" to
breastfeed. The very alarming thing is that the pediatric and obstetric
community (the MDs) are / will follow along with this policy without any
discussion. There is one OB who wants to fight this - what literature
references or other policies (with references, please) can we suggest to
this OB to assist him in his quest? There is a meeting coming up when the
OB wants to fight the Neonatologist with hard data. Our stand on this is
that if the mom is testing clean on spot checks go ahead and breastfeed
-what is anyone else's stand? Please respond to me privately @
[log in to unmask] as I am no-mail. Thanks very much.
