I just wanted to add a few words about having mothers sign a form that states
they understand the hazards of formula use. When do they sign this form? In
the hospital? Who tells them about which hazards and when? Be very careful
about using this technique. It is advocated by formula companies because it
removes the responsibility of the hospital, doctor, nurse, and formula
manufacturer for the outcome of the use of the product. If something happens
to the baby, out comes the form, absolving everyone but the victim.
Mothers are seldom instructed on the myriad hazards, such as the high
manganese levels which disrupt neurotransmitters in the brain leading to
impulsive and violent behavior; phytoestrogen levels in babies fed soy
formula which are up to 33,000 times higher than in a breastfed baby; high
nitrate levels in water used to reconstitute formula which can lead to
methemoglobinemia (reduced circulation of oxygen).
I think we need a better way to educate our mothers.
