Caloric intake management is a tempting but dangerous proposition in an 8
week old. Dr. Judith Roepke, Dr. Alfredo Pisacane and others have
demonstrated that babies will regulate their own caloric intake. What
happens when solids are introduced is that babies decrease their brst mlk
consumption proportionately to the calories ingested via solids (and at 8
weeks, those solids are inferior in virtually all aspects). And, according
to Pisacane, the earlier solids are introduced, the MORE likely a baby is
to become iron-deficient. However, there are those who might suggest using
DHA capsules for the mother's diet. I would suggest: using breast
compression while baby is at the breast; wearing the baby in a sling;
sleeping with baby; doing lots of skin-to-skin contact and baby massage to
increase the weight. Presuming that all of these have been tried, then
it's time to investigate issues such as low T3, T4 and TSH levels.
