Dear Lactnetters-
After the recent dialogue about venting frustration/being derogatory
toward other professions, I want to share a recent example of how working
together can be positively beautiful!:)
I was referred to parents of a 5 day old baby because of his recent
breast refusal. Mom said everything had been going well until her milk
surge....I thought it was a matter of the "landscape changing" with breast
fullness. Anyway, when I saw this mother, I found that her nipples were
terribly scabbed at the tips from when BF was going "well", and her baby
boy's tongue was attached right at the tip. We were able to get him on to
the breast, but he was only able to transfer a small amount from his mother's
flowing breasts.
The problem here? I remembered that every time I had sent a pt. with
tongue tie back to this particular pedi, she had sent them to childrens
hospital to see ENT specialists, making frenulum clipping a Big Deal unlikely
to be carried out. I hesitated to call her, but I also vaguely remembered
sending her articles about ankyloglossia and tongue clipping procedure way
back. She remembered! Also remembered mementioning the Evelyn Jain video
demonstrating the procedure. She not only agreed to view the tape, she also
promised that if she didn't feel comfortable doing the procedure, she would
find someone else who would. She called in a partner to observe her cutting
the frenulum, and passed the video around the office so that others would
know how. She called me after the procedure, excitedly telling me, "Debi, I
could feel the difference right away when he sucked on my finger!".
Within a day, this mom and baby were nursing well, and mom had no
pain. When we function as a team, everyone benefits!
Thanks for letting me share my happiness!
