Annette: If the baby is happy and thriving, this is not of concern.
Reflux which is a problem is associated with signs of distress in the
baby. The mother says that there are large amounts, but often it just
*looks* like a lot of milk. If the baby is gaining well, the mother can
be reassured that the amounts coming up are insignificant. As has been
said before, this is a laundry problem, not a medical problem.
Just one other thought, though. You say the baby is gaining a lot of
weight. Is she also having tons of wet diapers (more than 8/24 hrs) and
having explosive greenish stools? This may suggest an oversupply of milk,
in which case feeding a few feedings in a row at one breast may help.
Hope this helps, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
